Aston admits surprise at rapid Gray KO

RYAN Aston admits he surprised himself after taking just 90 seconds to rack up his latest win.

The 20-year-old Dudley middleweight dispatched Telford’s Kieron Gray with ease in front of a packed Prizefighter crowd at Wolverhampton Civic last Saturday, picking up his fifth victory in the professional ranks and second consecutive stoppage.

After a cagey opening, one left hook to the body was enough to see off Gray in a Prizefighter Prospect bout which was originally scheduled for six rounds.

While he was delighted with the win, Aston later admitted he would have liked a little more time in the ring.

He said: “I’ve told a lot of people I really didn’t expect him to go down from the punch.

“There wasn’t a great deal of power behind it but it was well placed, just below the ribs. I was still surprised to see him down from it.

“If I’m honest I didn’t really want to knock him down so early. I did say I expected to finish the fight in three but not as quickly as I did.

“I’ve said all along he is not a middleweight. Granted he looked bigger than before but I think he had just bulked up in the gym, there was no power.

“I knew the shot would hurt him. I never expected him to go down.

Aston will now head straight back into the gym as he prepares for his next fight, which takes place against the vastly experienced Lee Noble in Sheffield on March 17 on the undercard of Kell Brook’s clash with Matthew Hatton.

Meanwhile, the Dudley man hailed the Civic crowd for the support they gave to him and Priory Park welterweight stablemate Tommy Ghent, who recorded his third pro win with a points victory over Lancashire’s William Warburton.

Aston added: “It’s the closest professional fight I’ve had to home so far and I loved all mine and Tommy’s fans being there. The atmosphere was fantastic and the way the whole event was set up was superb.”
