Swimming star makes a splash at Dudley Leisure Centre
10:56am Monday 15th March 2010

A YOUNG swimmer met one of his idols as Olympic swimmer Ross Davenport made a splash at Dudley Leisure Centre.
Eight-year-old Luke Atkinson, from Stourbridge, met the swimming star, who represented Great Britain in the Beijing Olympics, and also won two gold medals in the 2006 Commonwealth Games, at a special open day at the Wellington Road club on Saturday.
Ross visited the centre to urge visitors to sign up for its free programme of Swim 4 Life sessions - which are government funded sessions available to the under 16s and over 60s.
As part of the scheme, which launched last year, Dudley's sport and physical team have already signed up over 400 people.
Councillor David Stanley, cabinet member for environment and culture, said: “We were excited to receive this visit from Ross and we’re hoping that more people were inspired by his example to get fit and active and make the most of our free swimming programme.”
